In Conversation with Fashion Illustrator Zhenya Z.

Working as an architect in Russia, it seemed for Zhenya Z. that she would not go into design. Hours were long, and she had worked hard for her architectural degree. However, instead of giving up on her dream of fashion, she decided to pursue it, and worked extensively for a host of Blogspot clients, perfecting her illustration skills in evening classes. Today, Zhenya Z. produces illustrations for some of the leading companies in fashion, including Revlon, L’Oreal, London Fashion Week, and Condé Nast. As she is now launching her own online course, we thought we’d hear what she had to say about her career…

1. What is your earliest memory of fashion design?

The story of Coco Chanel made a strong impression on me. 

She was the first woman who made me dream about fashion and Paris.

2. Do you have a favourite model?

Different models inspire me. But my favorite is definitely Adut Akech.

3. Where is your best place to draw?

My little office. It is a quiet and peaceful place to work.

4. Which designers inspire you?

Daniel Roseberry now, because he can draw.

5. What advice would you give to aspiring fashion illustrators?

Many illustrators are looking for a special secret, but there are no secrets. This is work. You have to do it everyday.

6. Are you working on a project at the moment?

I was preparing works for an exhibition in the Haze Gallery. At the moment, I’m starting work on my brand new course.

7. If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?

  1. World peace
  2. Happiness
  3. Freedom of creativity
