Eris Tran: ‘Draw every day to hone your skills. Success will smile with you’

From Versace to Iris Van Herpen, Dior to Ralph Russo, fashion illustrator Eris Tran has worked with some of the biggest names the industry has to offer. He is conscientious, flamboyant, his designs brilliantly executed, both from a technical and creative perspective. In this interview, we talk to him about his success as an illustrator in the fashion world…

1. Tell us a bit about your background

I began as a marketing student, with a passion for fashion. When I started my job and became a fashion illustrator. I have been in this field for 5 years.

2. What is your creative process?

After I saw a gorgeous dress on the runway floor, I took inspiration from myself and drew it on paper. With my experience, I always want to bring viewers the best works. Composed of a rich and diverse color palette, realistically-rendered textures, and lots of layers, each of my drawings and paintings exhibit my ability to conceptualize my imaginative ideas.

3. How competitive is the fashion illustration industry?

I really don’t know how tough or easy the industry’s competition is. But for myself, every road is full of difficulties, always full of difficulties. To get everyone’s attention, you have to show your own style to be different and work hard to create a springboard for big brands to notice.

4. You released your book ‘Dressing in Dreams: The Couture Fashion Illustrations of Eris Tran’ earlier this year. What is it about?

This book will show 100 colour illustrations of stunning evening gowns by me. It focuses on detailed close-ups, with insightful descriptions of the dress.

5. How did you get to work with brands like Dior and Versace?

One day, I went to work at the company, suddenly I received an email from the marketing agent in Versace. They said that they want me to draw in their event. I felt very happy when I received their email and I agreed to cooperate. They asked for the details of the work very carefully, so I tried my best to perfect my artworks.

6. What advice would you give to other fashion illustrators?

My advice to anyone who is passionate about fashion illustration is to draw every day to hone your skills. Success will smile with you.

7. Future plans?

Currently, I am working on a personal project. It combines Disney characters with Gucci’s wedding dresses. In the near future, I will continue to work on personal projects. Right now, I am devoting all my energy to my second fashion sketch book. This is the book that follows the Dressing In Dreams publication. I hope to receive support from all of my readers.
