Author J. J. Marshall on Fantasy Novel Writing

Author J. J. Marshall is immersed in the world of fantasy. With an imaginative plot and carefully crafted characters, she draws readers into her fictional adventures, spanning across kingdoms, underwater cities and apocalyptic landscapes. In this interview, we discuss her writing career, and what steps she took to get to be where she is today…

1. How long have you known you were going to become an author?

About 4 years ago is when I became serious about writing. Before that, I would just write because it was fun for me.

2. What process did you have to go through to be published?

I self-publish. With that process, I use KDP and Ingramspark to distribute my books, but there’s so much more to the process like outlining the story, writing, revising, hiring editors (multiple), cover artists, and copyrighting.

3. Do you plan a book or are you more spontaneous?

I usually plan. Once I have an idea of the story/plot, I begin to outline.

4. If you weren’t an author, what would you be?

Outside of being an author, I work in manufacturing driving fork trucks and making car parts.

5.How long does it take to write a book?

About a year. Sometimes a little longer. The one I’m co-writing right now has taken us over a year to write.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island, what one book would you take with you?

Hmmm, that’s a great question. If I was only able to take one book it would have to be a standalone. So, probably, Impossible by Nancy Werlin or House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A Craig.

7. What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

Don’t give up. Success doesn’t happen overnight.
