In Conversation with Artist Amber Vittoria

As one of 2020’s 30 under 30 artists, Amber Vittoria has established herself as one of the prominent feminist illustrators of this decade. Now, after a year of collaborating with clients as diverse as The New York Times and Gucci, she discusses her work with us.

1. Could you tell us a bit about your background?

I’m an illustrator living and working in New York City, by way of studying graphic design and fine art at Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.

2. How has your style developed over the years?

Over the last several years, I study my own subconscious decision-making within my work (how I approach form, color) and purposefully lean into those decisions into future works. With time, my style has developed.

3. Do you have any particular female figures that inspire you?

My mother and my late grandmother are my biggest inspirations.

4. How do you choose the colours you use in your work?

Certain palettes I’ve developed with time, but my aim with colour is to leverage it to tell a specific story or evoke a particular emotion.

5. What advice would you give to aspiring artists?

Listen to your instincts.

6. Future plans?

Once safe, traveling!

7. If you could describe your art in one word, what would it be?

Relatable.
