Alex Tang on Fashion Illustration today
Realistic, chic, and effortlessly stylish; three words that instantly come to mind when you look at Alex Tang’s fashion illustrations. Since he began illustrating, he has worked with numerous brands, including Glamour and Nine West, to showcase their designs through his artistic lens. In this interview, we talk to him about his work and what path he took to get to be where he is today…
1. How did you develop your style?
I achieved my style by firstly emulating other artists’ works who I admired. Eventually, I started to notice a trend in the way I produced my work. I found it aligned with my skillset so I decided to stick to it. My style has not changed much over the years; what has changed is my technique to achieve that style. I would say I am more confident and skilled at doing what I do now.
2. You have been featured in magazines like Glamour and Nine West. How did you submit your illustrations to be featured in these magazines?
The magazines approached me for commissioned work. That was how I got all my features.
3. What are your aspirations/ goals as a fashion illustrator?
I would love to be able to publish my own book whether it is tutorials or just a collection of my works, and my goal is to illustrate for magazine covers one day.
4. Which designers do you admire?
My favourite designers at the moment are Phoebe Philo, Anthony Vaccarello and Pierpaolo Piccioli.
5. What advice would you give to other fashion illustrators?
Just keep drawing! Simple as that. Don’t compare yourself to others. You are you… be proud of it!
6. Future plans?
Continue drawing, polish my skills and improve my art.
