6 up and coming fashion designers you need to know about

When it comes to fashion, there is always a flux of new, talented designers making their way up the ranks. We decided to compile a list of ones to watch out for on the runway!

1. Pyer Moss

Founder Kerby Jean-Raymond has been in the fashion industry since he was only fourteen years old, when he landed a placement at Manhattan’s High School of Fashion Industries. From there, he has worked with Marchesa, Victoria Keen, Marc Jacobs, and Kay Unger, who he helped, as a teenager, to design her evening collection. Pyer Moss is his tribute to the industry, a brand, which, in the past, has criticised police brutality towards black citizens, and has encouraged the augmentation of African-American voices.

2. Arjé

This unique brand was developed by Bessie Afnaim Corral and Oliver Corral. It is inspired by the notion that fashion should be effortless and not fragmentary, as they felt it had become. Each season is split up into chapters, like a book, to reflect the interconnectivity of their designs, and their company as a whole. One of the key attractions of Arjé is it is a ‘see now, buy now’ brand. This means that once a person has viewed the clothing on the catwalk they can purchase it immediately afterwards. In a world where fashion and styles are so transient, this selling method has obvious appeal.

3. Cecilie Bahnsen

Bahnsen takes fashion back to basics in her beautiful women’s wear collections. Her minimalistic style is far away from the masculine undergirdings of sports wear fashion which has become a trend in recent years. They give the wearer a feeling of femininity, empowerment, and self-awareness. It is a look which has taken influences from all around the world. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she equated the simplicity of her outfits to her Scandinavian heritage, while its romantic allure came from London and Paris.

4. Christopher John Rogers

Over the past few years, Christopher John Rogers has been working his way up the fashion ladder, from his Brooklyn apartment, to the dizzying heights of New York fashion week. His designs are often flamboyant; a burst of colour and inspiration, which have attracted a multitude of celebrities, including Michelle Obama, Cardi B and Lizzo. Indeed, Rogers’ talent has not gone unnoticed. In 2019, Rogers won the ‘Vogue Fashion Fund’, which granted him $400,000, allowing him to purchase a studio in Soho.

5. Nensi Dojaka

Albanian born Nensi Dojaka, has received critical acclaim for her MA show at the autumn/winter 2020 London fashion week. While studying at the London College of fashion, she worked with designers Fydor Golan and Peter Pilotto. The duo shaped her works and the way she operates in the industry. Her clothing primarily focuses on the female form, showcasing both its fragility and powerfulness.

6. Susan Alexandra

There is nothing quite so nostalgic, and entrancing as a Susan Alexandra collection. She reinvents a child’s jewellery box, putting all the colour, the kitsch and the glamour into her designer accessories. These energetic, vibrant pieces originate in her metalwork classes she took when she moved to New York. Her big break came when Henri Bendel decided to sell her collection, which had, at that time, only ever been available on her personal site. She hasn’t looked back since…
